Set in 1978, Once Upon a Time in High School tells the story of a new transfer student, Hyun-soo in a restrictive authoritarian high school full of corporal punishment, bullying, school violence and military guards to keep watch. Upon arrival, Hyun-soo excels in nearly everything he does, and befriends Hamburger (a student who sells adult magazines for tuition) and Woo-sik (the rash “head of the class” and best fighter). At the same time, he takes notice of a schoolgirl Eun-ju, who probably could make a career out of standing in as a double for Olivia Hussey. Woo-sik also takes notice and a love triangle emerges, against the backdrop of all the students struggling to deal with the restrictive facets of their high school lives.
Second year university student Soo-wan, who came from a poor family which owns a fried chicken shop, works as a private tutor to cover her expenses. One day she is assigned to tutor Ji-hoon, a high school boy from a rich family who cares more about his gangster business than his studies. Their lessons begin with many conflicts but end with love. Kyu-sik and his good buddy Seon-dal are studying to be priests. Well, actually Kyu-sik is studying and Seon-dal is trying to find reasons not to be a priest. After a night on the town Seon-dal lands them both in trouble, when he bumps into Kyu-sik during mass. He stumbles and breaks a cherished reliquary blessed by the Pope himself.
As a sort of punishment, Kyu-sik and Seon-dal are sent to a small parish in the country, led by the old priest Nam, to work hard, get their heads straight, and prepare for their upcoming ordination. Unbeknownst to Nam, his grand daughter Bong-hee has just returned from USA. Next morning when Kyu-sik is doing his chores, he stumbles across Bong-hee in the church. She’s collapsed from drinking, and when he attempts to help her, she falls on top of him and plants a big kiss on his mouth! In that exact moment, the resident nun walks in on them, and once again Kyu-sik’s gotten himself into trouble. Though Kyu-sik gets off with a warning, Bong-hee has sparked his interest. She’s obviously a lost soul, and must be saved (At this point the most dim-witted viewer will be aware of Kyu-sik’s attraction to Bong-hee, but it’ll take another hour for him to reach that conclusion, so we’ll just sweep that under the rug for now.)
Slowly a dysfunctional love/hate relationship develops between them. And though he gets increasingly frustrated with her disrespect for God - a fact she smirkingly enjoys - he just can’t seem to get her out of his mind. Things take a turn for the worse, when the old priest suggest Kyu-sik try to persuade Bong-hee to get baptised, as part of his education.
The poor priest really has his work cut out for him, but soon Bong-hee begins to look at Kyu-sik in a different light. And he himself begins to question his upcoming vows of celibacy.
Ji-hwan is a taekwondo student at a college, and Dal-rae studies drama. He dreams of becoming Korea's Jackie Chan while doing a part time job as a stuntman. Dal-rae continues to fail in auditions because she's too timid in public. They make fun of each other about their respective weaknesses, but underneath such playful and mischievous exchanges, they vaguely begin to feel there's something more than pure friendship.
Ji-hwan and Dal-rae are old friends and they have grown up in the same neighborhood. Ji-hwan admires Hong Kong movie star "Jacky Chan" and wants to be a world action star. Dal-rae has a desire to be an actress. They always bear grudges against each other with their private weak parts, and they quarrel everyday, however they are great friends who care for each other. One day, Dal-rae goes out with Young-hoon who is in the same Taekwondo group as Ji-hwan. Young-hoon is a student representative of the department as well as an all-round athlete. Ji-hwan is also dating a girl, Ji-min, a gorgeous glamour girl who has a well-shaped figure. It seems that there would be no problem between the good friends Ji-hwan and Dal-rae, but somehow a strange atmosphere arises after they start seeing someone else. Everybody knows it is more than just a friendship, except Ji-hwan and Dal-rae.
